Wardrobe building blocks – the 10 staples you need to own

After writing the previous post on what to buy, keep and cull, I thought more about this topic and felt that perhaps it could do with a ‘part 2’ to help you shop ‘smarter not harder’ and where to invest in quality over quantity. We’ve all done it, looked at a closet overflowing with clothes and moaned ‘I have nothing to wear!’. You stare at all the gorgeous pieces that you just had to buy, but nothing matches, nothing goes together and therefore you genuinely have nothing to wear! This is why it is important to be a smart shopper not a bargain shopper, because even if you get that top (that is beautiful but will go with absolutely NOTHING in your wardrobe) for 30% off, you are still outlaying 70% of the price for something that will probably never get worn. Not such a great bargain now is it? It’s important to have a really good idea of what’s already in your wardrobe before you go shopping to avoid doubling up on things you’ve already got (e.g. the million pairs of identical black shorts I own) and so you can look for pieces that will work with and compliment multiple other pieces that you already have. So here are my top 10 styling building blocks that every girl should invest in to have in her wardrobe. Once you’ve got these you can build your personal style from them by adding those beautiful pieces you’ve bought and  loved but just didn’t know how to wear before.

1. Black skirt

The skirts from Cue are to die for! This jacquard skirt is absolutely stunning and would be the perfect (and ultra chic) addition as a style staple to your wardrobe. Plain enough that it can go with anything, but stylish enough in it’s print to give any outfit the ‘wow’ factor! The Croc Jacquard Tuck Mini Skirt is available now for $209.

2. Black blazer

A black blazer can go over almost anything and therefore is a definite wardrobe staple. They are perfect over dresses, as part of a suit, and even to dress up jeans. While a black blazer is above trends, trends often include black blazers like right now they are popularly being worn in dark block colours with matching shorts and with a pop of colour from a bright shirt underneath and bold accessories. This gorgeous, sleek black blazer is an absolute steal on sale for $79.99 from Forever New

3.  A plain white tee

Quality is of up most importance when it comes to plain white tees as cheaper ones are almost always see through. This one from Jac + Jack thankfully is not see through and has even been recommended by Vogue Aus. A plain white tee like this can be the starting point of so many outfits and is great under a jacket or to show off a bold necklace. The Heston Tee – White $60. jj1274sp13-white-3

4. Jeans

Sass and Bide are absolutely excellent for jeans, I love their Zippora jean available for $230.

6. White mens style shirt

An over sized white mens style white business shirt can be the ultimate in sleek, sexy styling when worn tucked into a sexy black skirt of pair of black skinny jeans and killer heels. It’s a simple yet very powerful look. Just like with the plain white tee, quality is everything when it comes to this kind of shirt and the ALL shirt from Hope ticks all the boxes and is available for $189.ALL CROP BACK SHIRT

7. Black flats

A pair of good quality black flats is an absolute must. I don’t wear flats often but I do have a pair of great Nine West flats because they are so comfortable, easy to wear, go with everything and most importantly – stylishly finish off any outfit. I recommend the gorgeous Auro flat from Nine West available for $119.95.

There is a reason that  Kate Middleton wears these for almost every Royal engagement; they are stylish, elegant and go with everything. Available in nude or black the sledge court shoe from LK Bennet retails for £195.00. Sledge Patent Leather Platform Court Shoe

9. Winter coat

Even though it doesn’t get that cold here in Brisbane, I’m still a firm believer in owning a stunning winter coat like this one from Forever New. An absolute BARGAIN  at a tiny $99.99 everyone needs one of these classic staples in their wardrobes. I mean just look at it, how chic is that?! This is something you would get wear out of year after year after year as thankfully while it looks super warm, it’s not actually very thick so it doesn’t have to be glacial outside for you to wear it.

10. Big black handbag

I love the sleek, stylish shape and an ever chic side scarf of this Love Moschino bag for $399. A great size to carry everything you need and it’s stunning texture will compliment any outfit. Love Moschino - Tote Bag in Black JC4269PP0YKH0000
