A tale of two dresses…

I simply loved this dress. On trend in midi length with a mesh cut out, colourful and fresh, it was the perfect dress to welcome the new seasons fashions at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival. Unfortunately though, I’m sure like most of us do with most of our dresses, I knew I would never wear it again. Once i’ve worn a dress it just seems to lose a little bit of it’s magic, it’s not fresh and new anymore so like all the others it was destined to sit in the back of my wardrobe forever more, simply as a sartorial memory of a good night out. Or would it…

1239719_10151697128254682_1590880150_nI decided it was ridiculous to simply pack away such a beautiful dress, it just wasn’t fair. Still, I couldn’t wear it again the way it was so it was time to give it the chop! I decided that I would cut it off above the mesh and get rid of the sleeves, transforming it from an elegant evening dress into a fun party dress. Altering dresses is the easiest way to double your wardrobe and get more wear out of dresses you wouldn’t normally wear again. Why not give it a try with one of the beautiful dresses you have lying dormant in the back of your wardrobe?

Here is a compassion of the two versions of the same dress. Which do you prefer? Personally I still like the original but I am happy with the way the alterations turned out. At least I got one more wear out of such a fun dress!

mixMy next alteration dilemma lies with this dress… Do I leave it as a dress or cut it off into a top? I’m leaning towards leaving it as it is, at least for a little while and then cutting it off in a few months? I’d love to hear your opinions on this though!

  1. Firstly, I love that there’s a Brisbane fashion blogger out there who is still active! So many of the Bris fashion blogs go dormant and haven’t been posted in for years.

I love the sleeves on the original dress but can see why you altered it. Sometimes I alter clothes I absolutely love because it’s a waste to have them sitting in your wardrobe. Do you do you own alterations or have a tailor?

I think the last dress should be a top. You could wear it with jeans and heels as you have, perhaps with a colourful blazer (is the top B&W?).

Thank you so much! I am really enjoying blogging so I will definitely be continuing to post.

I really did love the dress longer and with the sleeves but I am glad I made the change, at least I got one more wear out of it. My mum is a seamstress so I am very lucky to be able to just take my clothes to her and she alters them for me. I alter a lot of my clothes before I even wear them to ensure they fit perfectly and sit the way I like. Often I also cut things off or add things on to a certain outfit, just to make it just the way I like it.

Yeah, it is black and white. I am thinking I will cut it off because I already have so many dresses and am in desperate need of more tops. It’s also a little short when worn as a dress so I would probably be a little uncomfortable wearing it that way.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments, I hope you enjoy the blog. I have checked out your blog as well and I must say I love it. I will definitely be following it! I love the posts about different cafe’s and the book launch post. I’d love to keep in touch.

Love what you did with the dress! Looks amazing before and after!

  3. I like the Mercedes dress MUCH better short — so you totally scored on that one!
And I like the t-shirt dress as a t-shirt … Thanks for following whatgives365! Have fun out there — you look adorable!

Thank you so much! I definitely did get lucky with the MBFF dress, it’s so versatile when you change your shoes and bag as well. I think it really looks like a completely new dress.

Most of the comments I’ve had do say give he top the chop so I think that is what I will do. I haven’t yet worn it as a dress because I just feel it’s a little short. I’ll post about it once I do chop it off and how I decide to style it. Please check back again!

That is no problem at all for following, your blog is very interesting!
